What is the Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents?

Effective July 4, 2022, the super visa gives a unique opportunity to applicants who want to visit their children or grandchildren in Canada. This type of visa is valid for up to 10 years. During this period, those with a super visa can stay in the country for up to 5 years after arriving in Canada, and they don’t need to renew their status. The super visa, also known as the multiple Canadian visa, is available throughout the year to submit an application, and you will need to have a minimum income to submit a visa application for your parents and grandparents. Note that IRCC receives around 200,000 sponsorship applications each year, but there are only 35,000 applications resulting in a visa. Who Can Apply for a Canadian Super Visa?

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can apply for a super visa opening the way for their parents or grandparents to come to Canada. This visa type can be categorized under the sponsorship visa, in which you can provide the required documents to become a sponsor of your parents or grandparents after proving you have enough funds to support them. It is important to know that no dependents are allowed to be included in this program, and only parents or grandparents can get a super visa and visit their children in the country.

Parents and Grandparents Super Visa Eligibility Criteria

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), persons who come to the country must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a Canadian super visa:  
  • Being a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
Having a signed letter from your child or grandchild who wants to invite you to Canada. The letter must include:
  • A promise of financial support during your stay in Canada
  • The list and number of people in the household of the sponsor
  • A copy of the sponsor’s citizenship or permanent resident document
Having medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that should be:
  • Valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
  • At least $100,000 in emergency coverage
  • Approved that the medical insurance has been fully paid

What Are the Required Documents for Getting a Super Visa?

There are 2 types of documents required for submitting an application. First, the sponsor must provide the following documents to be able to create an application and request a Canadian super visa: Proof of income showing that you can support your parents or grandparents
  • PR card or citizenship status in Canada
  • Driving license
  • Employment letter
  • Proof of tax remittance (T4 or T1)
  • Filling out the application form
Then, persons who want to come to Canada with the support of the sponsor must provide these documents:
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining
  • Invitation letter from the sponsor
  • Evidence to prove they are parents or grandparents of the sponsor
  • Bank statement for the last 6 months
  • Medical and police clearance certificates
  • Insurance coverage for at least 1 year or total coverage of $100,000

Proof of Funds for Succeeding in Canadian Super Visa

The child or grandchild who invites you to Canada must have enough income and meet the minimum necessary income requirements. The government of Canada accepts these documents for proof of funds:
  • Notice of assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
  • Employment letter, including all the information about the sponsor’s job and salary
